The London club is reportedly thinking about moving for Wolfsburg defender Maxence Lacroix as part of their search for a new centre-back.
Chelsea could use some defensive reinforcements this summer, and Maxence appears to be a talented young footballer who could provide an upgrade over unconvincing performers like Kurt Zouma and Christensen, as well as a long-term replacement for the ageing Thiago Silva.
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is considering Maxence as a possible replacement for bigger names like Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane. According to the report, the defender could leave Wolfsburg for nearly £26 million, which would be a steal for the highly-rated 21-year-old.
Maxence has surprised in the Bundesliga, and the Frenchman may believe it is now time to move on and prove himself at a bigger club. Blues fans will undoubtedly want to see their club have another successful transfer window after demonstrating their ambition with a busy summer last year.
But a signing like Maxence might be important to give them a greater defence depth and quality. The Blues are not really far removed from being genuine PL title contenders.
