Manchester United are said to have been turned down by Serie A club Atalanta after making a £39 million bid for Cristian Romero.
The Old Trafford club is looking for a new centre-half this summer, and the 23-year-old star has piqued their attention after a stellar season.
According to Tuttosport in Italy, La Dea has rejected a £39 million bid from United and is demanding £52 million before allowing the Argentine to leave.
Romero is presently on loan from Juventus until 2022, with the option to make the transfer permanent for £21.5 million, which is expected.
However, he is not seen as important, and Atalanta may cash in immediately, making a profit on the player.
Cristian appeared in 31 Serie A games last season, helping Gian Piero Gasperini’s team finish third in the table.
Romero’s performances were remarkable, and he was named the division’s defender of the year.
It was by far his greatest season to date, but Romero has excelled in Italy since moving from Belgrano in his hometown.
His performances for Genoa led Juventus to sign him, but there was no place in the senior squad, so he was loaned back to Genoa and subsequently to Atalanta.
